Details
L-serine is a neutral amino acid with an isoelectric point of 5.68. It exists as hexagonal plate-like or prismatic crystals, odorless, and with a sweet taste. The solubility of L-serine is 50 g/L, and it is readily soluble in water and formic acid. At 20°C, its solubility in water is 250 g/L, while it is almost insoluble in ethanol, ether, and acetone.

H-SER-OH application areas

  • Medicine and Biochemistry

Used as peptide synthesis intermediates for the preparation of drugs (such as antibiotics and anticancer peptides). Its derivative, H-Ser-Asp-OH, exhibits biological activity and may participate in signal transduction.

  • Chiral Synthesis

In asymmetric catalysis, serine derivatives can serve as chiral ligands to control reaction stereoselectivity.

  • Research Tools

Used in cell culture, protein structure studies, and metabolic pathway analysis.

Hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathy type 1 (HSAN1) is clinically characterized

by early-onset dissociated sensory impairment, affecting pain and temperature sensation,

while vibration and joint position senses are preserved. This is due to length-dependent
axonal neuropathy.

Many patients frequently experience severe positive sensory symptoms such as radiating

or burning pain in the limbs, and some may undergo a brief period of hyperalgesia in the

early stages. Due to severe sensory impairment, many patients develop neuropathic ulcers

and Charcot joints, and may even require amputations.

Most patients exhibit significant motor dysfunction early in the disease course. Autopsy

reports of HSAN1 patients reveal marked degeneration of dorsal root ganglion cells and

a reduction in myelinated axons in peripheral nerves . Unmyelinated axons are also affected,

though reportedly to a lesser extent.

H-SER-OH Transgenic mice carrying the C133W mutation closely mimic the disease

progression observed in humans. By 10 months of age, these mice develop hyperalgesia,

motor dysfunction, thinning of peripheral nerve myelin, loss of visceral innervation, and

signs of neuronal stress in the dorsal root ganglia.

Our labrotary

By 12 months, the hyperalgesia subsides, and by 14 months, they exhibit small-fiber

sensory neuropathy and sensory-motor deficits similar to those seen in HSAN1 patients.

Unlike humans, C133W transgenic mice exhibit infertility, with reduced sperm count, sperm

motility, and testicular weight, features that can be reversed by forced overexpression of

the wild-type gene in double-transgenic mice.
