Preparation and Properties of Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose
Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC), also known as cellulose hydroxypropyl methyl

ether, is prepared by etherifying cellulose. Some glucose molecules in the cellulose
backbone are replaced by methoxy and hydroxypropoxy groups , and the structure is
shown in Figure 1.

HPMC belongs to semi-synthetic natural organic polymer compounds.

Based on the existing research on HPMC synthesis methods, by using the methods of

nitrogen protection alkalization and stepwise etherification, the prepared HPMC has a

relatively high viscosity. It is mentioned in the literature that the preparation of HPMC is

mainly obtained by reacting a mixed etherifying agent of methyl chloride and propylene

oxide with alkali cellulose, and the reaction equation is shown in Figure 2.

HPMC has a three-dimensional spatial network structure, strong mechanical properties

and carrying capacity. There are a large number of hydroxyl groups in the molecule,

which can form hydrogen bonds with water, resulting in good water solubility. Meanwhile,

HPMC is non-toxic and has good biodegradability and biocompatibility, so it can be used

in multiple directions in the pharmaceutical industry.

On the other hand, from the perspective of gel properties, HPMC Hypromellose
belongs to thermogel, with relatively low viscosity at low temperatures and poor toughness.

Therefore, in order to make it more adaptable to people's needs, it is necessary to

optimize its structure, so that its properties can be changed correspondingly and it can

play its role better.
