Physical and chemical properties of mustard without taste, boiling point 77 ℃, freezing
point -82 ℃, molecular weight 53.06. Density: Gas (air=1) 1.83; Liquid (water at 4 ℃)=
1) 0.797 (20 ℃). Burning limit in air: 3-17% (by volume). Due to flammability, it should
be mixed with carbon tetrachloride (66%) in an amount not exceeding 34%. Natural

Vinyl Cyanide is highly toxic to humans and its toxicity is comparable to that of hydrogen
cyanide. Acrylonitrile is highly toxic to insects and is the main fumigant for controlling
various grain pests
Among them, it has the strongest toxicity.
Purpose
Acrylonitrile used alone or mixed with carbon tetrachloride has little effect on the
germination of various vegetable, grain, and flower seeds, but it can cause some damage
to corn seeds. Acrylonitrile and carbon tetrachloride mixture can be used to control the
vast majority of pests in stored grains.
Experiments have shown that a mixture of acrylonitrile and carbon tetrachloride in a
volume ratio of 1:1 can be used to prevent and control potato tuber moths during storage
without damaging the tubers.
Due to the high boiling points of acrylonitrile and carbon tetrachloride, a simple method
has been developed for rapid evaporation during atmospheric fumigation by threading
cotton cord through the bottom of a shallow iron plate. At the beginning of fumigation,
liquid fumigant is injected into the tray, and then a fan is used to blow air towards the
cotton seeds until evaporation is complete.
Vinyl Cyanide is chemically active and the reaction equations are as follows: The
chemical formula is CH₂ = CHC≡N. The molecular weight is 53.06. It is a colorless,
pungent - smelling and toxic liquid. The melting point is - 83.5℃, the boiling point is
77.5 - 79℃, the relative density is 0.8060, the refractive index is 1.3911, and the

Vinyl Cyanide forms an explosive mixture with air and the explosion limit is 3.05% - 17%
(by volume).It is soluble in water, acetone and benzene, and miscible with ethanol and
diethyl ether.The LD₅₀ is 93mg/kg (for rats, oral administration).
