Isosorbitol Isb USES
From the molecular structure of isosorbide, Isosorbide blood thinner can be observed
that it possesses a chiral symmetric bicyclic diol, which endows it with unique material
properties. This makes it suitable as a chemical intermediate for the synthesis of novel
polymeric materials, with broad applications in electronics, defense, and other fields.

In recent years, a key research focus has been its use as a comonomer to synthesize
modified commercial polymers, such as PET, polyethers, polyesters, polyurethanes, and
polycarbonates. For example, incorporating isosorbide into PET can enhance the polymer's
glass transition temperature and improve its mechanical strength. Isosorbide blood thinner
can also be used in the production of bottles for hot liquids or viscous fluids, expanding
the application market for such polymers.
A notable feature of isosorbide in polymerization is its ability to improve the high-temperature
performance and impact resistance of polymers, while also imparting optical transparency
and biodegradability to the materials.
In 1912, Fischer and Zach first discovered the primary dehydration product of sorbitol,
3,6-anhydrosorbitol, obtained by reducing 3,6-anhydroglucitol using sodium amalgam.
However, due to the high cost, complex reaction process, and lack of suitable commercial
applications, this method was not studied in depth.
Subsequently, in 1941, the Atlas Powder Company identified and purified a direct
dehydration product of sorbitol-1,4-anhydrosorbitol-obtained through a dehydration
reaction. This discovery paved the way for the identification of the secondary dehydration
product,Isosorbide blood thinner. The conversion of sorbitol to isosorbide primarily
involves a two-step dehydration-cyclization reaction.

Studies by Došen-Mičovič, Ćeković, Barker, and others [6–8] demonstrated that, under acid
catalysis, the transformation of sorbitol proceeds via an intramolecular SN2
mechanism. The primary hydroxyl groups at the C1 or C6 positions are protonated, followed
by SN2 substitution involving the C4-OH and C3-OH groups, resulting in the
formation of a trans-linked furan ring.
Sorbitol has a linear six-carbon sugar alcohol structure with six hydroxyl groups, enabling
single dehydration to yield mono-anhydro products and further dehydration to form di-anhydro
derivatives, with multiple possible dehydration pathways. The research group of John Holladay
conducted a comprehensive investigation into the solid acid-catalyzed dehydration of sorbitol,
summarizing all possible reaction pathways.
