Synthesis of PIsIeC Copolycarbonates
The PIsIeC copolycarbonates were synthesized via a two-step melt polymerization
process, including transesterification and polycondensation. A typical synthesis procedure
was as follows: IS, IIDML, DPC, and LiAcac (0.05 mol% relative to diols) were added to
a flask. The reactor was then heated to 130°C and stirred under a N₂ atmosphere for 3
hours.
Subsequently, the temperature was increased to 190°C under reduced pressure (<50 kPa).
After 5 minutes, the temperature was gradually raised to 240°C, and the vacuum was
reduced to below 150 Pa for 10–40 minutes, yielding the copolycarbonate PIsIeC-X,
where X denotes the molar percentage of IIDML relative to the total diol content in the

As shown in Table 1, the molecular weight (MW) and viscosity of the copolycarbonates
were significantly higher than those of homopolycarbonates, depending on the formulation.
Intermolecular Interactions Between IS and IIDML
To elucidate why the combination of IS and IIDML enhances MW, the authors investigated
their interactions using DFT calculations. As illustrated in Figure 1, two types of
hydrogen-bonding interactions can form between IS and IIDML:Isosorbide cost.
The first type occurs between the oxygen atom in the bicyclic backbone of IIDML and
the hydrogen atom of the exo-OH group in IS, with a bond length of 1.779 Å.
The second type exists between the oxygen atom in the bicyclic backbone of IS and the
hydrogen of the −OH group in IIDML, with a bond length of 1.840 Å.
Due to hydrogen bonding, the O-H bond length of IS's exo-OH group increased from
0.962 Å to 0.971 Å, while the endo-OH bond length remained unchanged. Furthermore,
the hydrogen-bonding interactions altered the charge density of IS's exo-OH: the oxygen
charge decreased from −0.756 to −0.797, indicating enhanced electronegativity.
