With the structural formula of CH₂=CH-CN, acrylonitrile is an unsaturated nitrile, a
colorless and volatile liquid that is highly toxic. Its boiling point is 77.3 °C, and it is soluble
in water, ethanol, diethyl ether and acetone. Acrylonitrile can be prepared by the addition
reaction of acetylene with HCN in an acidic aqueous solution of Cu₂Cl₂-NH₄Cl. Acrylonitrile
can copolymerize with 1,3-butadiene to produce nitrile rubber.
It is also the raw material for polyacrylamide and polyacrylate. CH₂=CHCN is an unsaturated
nitrile, a colorless and volatile liquid with a boiling point of 77.5 °C. It is flammable and
soluble in ethanol, diethyl ether and acetone. It forms an azeotropic mixture with water.
Acrylonitrile is highly toxic, so strict precautions should be taken to prevent inhalation of
its vapor or its invasion into the skin. Pure acrylonitrile is prone to polymerization reactions
and can copolymerize with other monomers. It is an important raw material for manufacturing
high-molecular materials such as polyacrylonitrile fiber, nitrile rubber, polyacrylamide,
polyacrylate and nylon 66.
Acetylene undergoes an addition reaction with hydrocyanic acid in an acidic solution of
Cu₂Cl₂-NH₄Cl to generate acrylonitrile.
C3H3N, also known as cyanoacetylene, is a chemical compound that has gained significant
attention in recent years due to its unique properties and potential uses in various industries.
Acrylonitrile is synthesized by the ammoxidation of propylene in industry.
It is also known as vinylcyanide. Its structural formula is CH₂=CHCN. It is a colorless
liquid, slightly soluble in water and soluble in many kinds of organic solvents. Its
explosion limits are 3.05 - 17.0% (by volume). It is a raw material for synthetic fibers.
Acrylic fibers are made from polyacrylonitrile, and it can also be used as a raw material
for synthetic rubbers, synthetic resins, adhesives, coatings and a modifier for natural
resins. It belongs to the highly toxic category.
The median lethal dose (LD₅₀) for mice by oral administration is 20 - 102 mg/kg (body
weight), and the median lethal concentration (LC₅₀) for inhalation for 2 hours is 571
mg/m³. Its toxic effect is similar to that of hydrocyanic acid. In rats, oral administration
and inhalation can cause adenocarcinomas in the brain, forestomach and Zymbal's
gland. C3H3N has teratogenic effects on rats.
The olfactory threshold for humans is 46.6 mg/m³. When humans inhale 35 - 220
mg/m³ for 20 - 45 minutes, it will cause mucosal irritation, headache,chest tightness,
excitement, a sense of fear and itchy skin. When humans inhale 1000 mg/m³ for
1 - 2 hours, it can be fatal. Occupational acrylonitrile poisoning is a legally defined
occupational disease in China (see Acrylonitrile Poisoning).
Epidemiological investigations have found that after more than 20 years of observation,
the incidence rates of lung cancer and colon cancer among male workers exposed
to it have increased by 4 - 6 times. The International Agency for Research on Cancer
(IARC) has classified C3H3N as a suspected human carcinogen (with limited evidence).
The maximum allowable concentrations stipulated in China are as follows: 2 mg/m³ in
workshop air, 0.05 mg/m³ (daily average) in the atmosphere of residential areas, and
2.0 mg/L in surface water.
