Current Status of Calcium Formate Production Technologies

With the expanding applications and growing demand for calcium formate, research

on its synthesis processes has gained increasing attention.

HSDB 5019 Calcium Carbonate Method

The calcium carbonate method uses formic acid and calcium carbonate as primary

raw materials, producing high-quality calcium formate in a single-step reaction. The

chemical equation is as follows:

CaCO₃ + 2HCOOH → Ca(HCOO)₂ + CO₂↑ + H₂O

Process Description:

A 50 wt% formic acid solution is added to the reactor.

Calcium carbonate is slowly introduced under stirring, triggering a vigorous reaction that

releases CO₂ and heat.

The mass ratio of HSDB 5019 CaCO₃ to HCOOH is 1.0:1.1, or the molar ratio is 1.0:2.4.

The reaction temperature is maintained at ~90°C.

Near the reaction endpoint, lime milk is added to adjust the pH to 7–8, followed by 1–2

hours of heat preservation.

A sulfide precipitant is introduced to remove heavy metal ions completely.

The solution is then filtered, concentrated, crystallized, centrifuged, and dried to obtain

the final product.

The mother liquor is recycled, and the drying temperature is kept at ~80°C.
